Nairobi Backpackers was opened in February 2001 with the aim of providing budget travellers with an alternative to staying in cheap downtown hotels (most of which are becoming decidedly “seedy”) or having to travel out of the city to established campsites.

Since 2003, under new management, the facilities have been extensively improved and the number of people using the hostel has grown each month and repeat stays are becoming common. A number of overland companies have been using the hostel as a drop-off point for passengers wanting affordable accommodation outside the city centre, and as an option to camping. We pride ourselves on providing a "HOME AWAY FROM HOME" atmosphere and this is evident in the number of comments received by guests who have stayed.

"A little bit of home.... in the heart of Africa"

Convenient Location
Nairobi Backpackers is situated on Milimani Road, adjacent to the Salama Annexe Hotel, and approximately 30 minutes drive from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Less than 2kms to the city centre, or an easy 20 minute walk, it is ideally located for the independent traveller or client awaiting the start of an overland safari. It is only a few minutes walking distance to other hotels situated along Milimani Road - Heron Court, Milimani, Sagret Equatorial, Lenana Mount - and is therefore handy should travellers decide to drink or eat away from the hostel. Also within easy walking distance are city restaurants, shops and supermarkets; General Post Office and Internet cafes; foreign embassies, airline offices and the National Museum.
Taxis (at competitive rates) are available outside the premises 24 hours a day, should anyone wish to venture out in the evenings.

Comfortable rooms and cabins
The house is a 1940’s stone colonial set on a half-acre plot. It has been extensively renovated to include: 5 bedrooms 3 dorms with 24 bunkbeds, (8 per dorm), 3 twin rooms, and 5 family rooms/cabins, totalling 50 beds). Facilities include a new bathroom with hot showers, western toilets and washbasins; breakfast room with a satellite TV; DVD film library, a storage room for baggage; a reception with travel desk. Locker facilities are available, plus washing facilities are available for those wishing to do their own laundry, or clothes washing can be arranged for a small fee.

A covered outside seating area has also been constructed in the garden, with bar, central open fire and free pool table for anyone wishing to eat, drink, read etc, outside.

There is also space for camping.

24 HOUR WIRELESS INTERNET NOW INSTALLED FOR GUEST USE.

We now also have a furnished apartment just 200 metres from the hostel, with Kitchen, bathroom, double plus single bed, plus use of pleasant garden and swimming pool.

Price is Ksh2500 per night, Ksh14,000 per week, or Ksh45,000 for a month.

Affordable Rates
The accommodation is sold on a bed only basis, but a vaied breakfast menu is available from 06-30 onwards. There is no self-catering but snacks and drinks are available throughout the day, and a full family style dinner is served every night at very reasonable prices. Guests all dine together for this, making an excellent opportunity to get to know the other guests. Alternatively, guests can eat at one of the many city restaurants or local hotels.

Check-in/Check-out
The hostel operates on a 24 hour basis. The check-in time is 11.30 am, with check-out time at 11.00 am. Early arrival times are not a problem, but guests may have to wait in the rest areas until the previous occupants have checked out. Late arrivals will find the gate locked, but there is a watchman on duty to open up and escort guests to their rooms.

Informative
A travel desk has been set up in the reception to provide guests with independent travel information on local tours within the East African region as well as advice on safaris and other activities. Other services include full safari service with our sister company, WILD ROVERS AFRICA LTD, which operates from our premises, day tours around Nairobi, airline reservations and confirmations, assistance with bus and rail bookings, shuttle tickets to Arusha and Moshi, and airport transfers from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport or Wilson domestic airport.

Security
Although the hostel is only a couple of kilometres from the city centre, it is situated in a quiet, safe area and only minutes from State House where the President normally resides. Walking in the surrounding areas is safe and the locals are welcoming and friendly. As part of the renovation, a 3-metre high fence has been erected around the property and gives the guests a great deal of privacy when sitting outside. The gates to the property are locked at night around 11.00pm, and there is adequate, secure parking for self-drive & overland vehicles. Night guard is on duty for late comers and a watch dog patrols the premises overnight.
A safe is provided for anyone wishing to leave valuables and baggage can be stored free of charge while on safari.
