WILDLIFE SAFARIS

6 Days/5 Nights Maasai Mara & Rift Valley Lakes (Camping)

Day 1 Nairobi - Maasai Mara
Morning departure from Nairobi, descending the escarpment and driving along the floor of the Great Rift Valley to the Maasai town of Narok. After a stop for refreshments, proceed to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve with game viewing enroute to the overnight camp.

Day 2 Maasai Mara
Full day game viewing with picnic lunch.
One of Kenya's premier reserves, the Maasai Mara is an extension of the Serengeti and world famous for the spectacular migration of thousands of wildebeest and zebra during the months of July and October. The Mara is also rich in resident game with over 95 species recorded. These include the "Big Five" - elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard and rhino - as well as giraffe, hippo, cheetah, hyena, hippo and numerous antelope. The Reserve is also rich in birdlife with over 480 species recorded in recent times. Return to camp for dinner.

Day 3 Maasai Mara
After breakfast we undertake a morning gamedrive before returning to camp for lunch. After lunch you have the option of further game driving, or taking a walk with the moran to visit a local manyatta and learning a little about their way of life. Overnight and dinner at the camp.

Day 4 Maasai Mara - Lake Nakuru
After breakfast, depart the campsite and proceed via Narok to the Rift Valley town of Nakuru.
For many years Lake Nakuru has been famous for the thousands of flamingo that inhabit the shores of the lake. In recent times, the water level of the lake has fluctuated greatly and this has affected the numbers present at any one time. More importantly, the Park has been established as a rhino sanctuary and these are frequently seen on gamedrives - along with buffalo, lion, giraffe, waterbuck, and the elusive leopard. Overnight at a local hotel.

Day 5 Lake Nakuru - Lake Baringo
The morning is spent game viewing in the Park. After lunch we travel north from Nakuru to Lake Baringo, the bird-watching centre of Kenya with over 450 different species. Baringo is a fresh water lake that supports many different species of aquatic animal and birdlife, including hippo and crocodile. The lake is surrounded by mountains and an optional boat ride gives you the chance to view the prolific birdlife in this spectacular setting. Overnight camp.

Day 6 Lake Baringo - Lake Bogoria - Nairobi
In the morning we travel the short distance to Lake Bogoria, one of the most beautiful of the Rift Valley lakes. Because the lake has no outlet, intense evaporation has lead to high levels of salts, minerals, and blue-green algae, the staple food of flamingos. This lake is now home to thousands of Lesser and Greater flamingo, a fantastic sight for photographers. Bogoria is also a thermal area with hot springs and geysers and caution should be taken when walking near these areas. Greater Kudu and various antelope are frequently seen in areas surrounding the lake.
In the afternoon we depart for Nairobi via Nakuru, arriving in the late afternoon.
