The wall is named after the Roman Emperor, Hadrian, (Hadrianus) who ordered its construction in AD122, to keep out the northern barbarian tribes as he described them. It stretches from Wallsend-on-Tyne on the East coast, to Bowness on the West. The original wall stretched for 75 miles, but the route of the official walk covers 84 miles, (about 130 kms). The fortresses on the wall were manned for 270 years. Much of the wall has since disappeared, but stretches like the one above are still in place. Hadrian’s Wall Path was officially opened in 2002. Along its length can be found ruins of mile castles and watchtowers in various states of decay, plus a Roman Museum.
To the Eastern end, the official path goes through urban Newcastle, although primarily on bridle-paths which are ideal for cycling. There is an official cycle route along the whole distance, but it deviates from the walk, as much of that is cross country walking and unsuitable for bicycles.
Most of the sections where the wall remains have to be done on foot, therefore we decided to accommodate all preferences, all walking, all cycling or combination of both.
The trips will be supported by a backup vehicle, which will take luggage and camp equipment from one campsite to the next, leaving the group to enjoy the luxury of walking with just a day pack.
Groups doing combination trips will have the cycles transported to the next cycling section by the support vehicle. Flexibility is high on the priority list for this type of trip, because of various fitness levels, strains or blisters or just a desire to ride in the vehicle for a while or do more cycling and it doesn’t mean the whole group is affected.
Trips will be arranged for a minimum group size of 4 people, but we can co-ordinate the bookings of individual travellers to join in with a group.
The terrain does involve some short steep ascents and descents, but overall, the difficulty level is moderate, covering mostly rolling hills, moor-land and coastal plain. Good foot-ware is essential, as it can be rough underfoot in places, with mud and loose gravel. There is minimal road walking and even the cycle route is mostly cycle track.
The start point for the trips will be Sheffield, but for groups booking together, alternative start points can be arranged, for example any northern airport or rail/ bus station.
Trips will range from a 3 day cycling only trip, to a 7 day walking only trip, for the whole distance, with prices starting from £275 for the 3 days. Larger groups can be accommodated and group discounts will be available dependant on group size.
People interested in doing just a short section of the walk to see the historical highlights can also be accommodated and can even join a group mid way. An interesting shorter walk is Chollerford to Newtown, a distance of about 34 miles, which takes in the best of the wall and the heritage sight museum.
All trips will include food and tented accommodation with bed mats for the trip duration, guide, support vehicle, bicycle where relevant, hot drinks.
Personal equipment, sleeping bags, soft drinks and alcohol are not included.
You will need either a water bladder or water bottle. They are essential as water replenishment is difficult in certain parts.
The possible combinations are endless and obviously, the larger the group, the better the price, so please contact us for an informal chat about your requirements and we will tailor a trip to your needs and timescale.
